DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA, June 3, 2014 –MCW announced today the completion of an infrastructure upgrade that will enable the dental school to digitize all record keeping, facilitate patient workflow and monitor procedures and revenue intake. The upgrade included the installation of practice management software at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) School of Dentistry

During the ten-day training and installation program, team members from Henry Schein, Inc., the primary donor of the computers, practice management software, Dentrix®Enterprise, and the digital X-ray equipment, trained over one hundred oral health care professionals and clerical support staff to customize, utilize and maintain the software, the first of its kind in Africa.

After completing the training and installation, the program entered the “go live” phase, in which the trainers oversaw the testing of the software in real time during the various stages of patient care.

As a “train-the-trainer” initiative, the program included the additional training of four “super user” clinicians, who would be responsible for continued training with remote support from Henry Schein Inc. in the U.S. “We are very confident that the training will continue at the school and we are prepared to take over from the trainers,” said Dr. Anthony Severine, a “super user.”

MCW Chief Operating Officer, Khalid Elachi, toured the MUHAS Dental School in Dar es Salaam after the “go live” phase finished. “I was impressed not only by the installation of a computer system beside each dental chair, but by seeing dental students, nurses, faculty and staff actually using the newly installed practice management software,” said Elachi. “It really is amazing to see everyone adapting to and using the software only a few days after the install and training and we are grateful to our partners in the U.S. and Tanzania for making this possible.”

Due to the new computer technology needs of the MUHAS School of Dentistry, Muhimbili University will provide ongoing on-site ICT (information and communications technology) support to the dental school clinics.

This training and installation program, which also included a donation and training on digital panoramic x-ray and sensors to digitize x-rays, represents the third collaborative effort between MCW and MUHAS. Previous efforts included upgrading the MUHAS School of Dentistry Dental Clinics and Dental Laboratory.
