The Young Leaders Conference – Zambia, taking place from April 24th to 26th, 2023, will welcome young leaders in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors from Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

What is it?

The primary goal of the conference in Zambia is to empower young leaders in East and Southern Africa with leadership skills to discuss region-specific challenges and carve out solutions on the topic of Integrating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into Primary and Secondary Education. 

The conference will cater to young leaders between the ages of 25-35 who are motivated to expand their leadership knowledge and engage in important discussions that advance their region’s well-being with a focus on Leadership and ICT Integration. The conference is designed to encourage them to establish regional networks for future exchange.

Objectives

  • Reach more young leaders in East and Southern Africa and equip them with leadership skills to help them establish regional networks for future exchange;
  • Increase knowledge in identifying and understanding challenges of ICT integration in the education sector of the East and Southern Africa region for the participating youth;
  • Give the participants the opportunity to carry out community outreach and mobilization for ICT with appropriate stakeholders locally and regionally;
  • Provide mentorship and financial support to develop community projects.

Which sessions are available virtually?

Through carefully selected speakers and training materials, the Young Leaders Conference, for three days, is tailored for ICT professionals and community development practitioners. Given that the conference is in person in Lusaka and combines workshops, talks, networking events, and presentations, we have selected three sessions to live stream virtually for you.

Leadership

Introspection as a Leader

In this session, Melissa from the Center for Young Leaders in Africa will share insights on her journey as a young leader and how taking the time to identify and reflect on your skills, strengths, and weaknesses is crucial. In addition, after her presentation, Melissa will guide the group in identifying their own personal strengths and areas of growth. 

Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to identify their personal strengths and areas for growth as a leader.

Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa

ICT

In this session, participants will hear from representatives of the public and private sectors, academia and non-profit worlds on the present challenges in infrastructure, training and education in ICT Integration in primary and secondary education.

Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to strategize and identify solutions to the challenges of ICT integration in the education sector of East and Southern Africa.

Networking and Leveraging Resources

Networking

In this session, Anne Lise from MC-Rwanda will guide participants in identifying the existing resources and networks to facilitate ICT integration in East and Southern Africa.  As participants conclude the conference, through this session, they will be able to list down the existing resources and the next steps to ensuring these resources are utilized. 

Learning Outcomes: Participants will learn how to leverage existing resources and identify new ones and have a positive outlook toward ICT integration in the primary and secondary levels of education.

Who are the speakers?

Anne Lise Uwingabiye
Networking and Leveraging Resources
Lise is an experienced professional who specializes in developing programs and projects using agile frameworks, coaching, research, content development, and business analysis skills. She has led research and development projects for communities and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Andrew Dumisani Moyo
Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa
Andrew Dumisani Moyo is a diligent and experienced IT Technician and Trainer at Computers for Zambian Schools. He is an accomplished Trainer who enjoys using his skills to contribute to the exciting technological advances that happen every day at Computers for Zambian Schools. He graduated from the Chartered Institute for IT with a Bachelor's Degree in IT Management. He currently conducts Training Programs in IT with over two thousand students per year.
Sosten Mshanga
Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa
Sosten has a Diploma in primary education from Chipata College of Education. He also has a Bachelor of Arts Education in Physical Education and Sport History from Kwame Nkrumah University. Sosten obtained a Certificate in Computer Studies and previously worked as a class teacher at Charity Matipa School and as a subject teacher at Malundu School. Currently, he is working under the Ministry of Education at Chikoka Primary School.
Peter Mulenga
Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa
Peter is the President of Computer Science Teachers Association of Zambia (COSTAZ). He has a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). He also has a Diploma in Primary Education and various certificates in general ICT and Education. Peter has more than 10 years of experience in ICT with a strong background in cloud systems, distributed systems, data centers, IT infrastructure, software development, C++, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, XML, MYSQL, Word Press, hardware and software installation and maintenance, networking, management, and leadership.
Melissa Sarah Hamalambo
Introspection as a Leader
Melissa Hamalambo has close to a decade of experience in the field of youth leadership development. Currently, Melissa is an Executive Director at the Center for Young Leaders in Africa (CYLA) Zambia, focusing on youth political leadership development, creating a multi-party platform for dialogue, self-development and networking, and advocacy for the inclusion and representation of young people, women and persons living with disabilities in Zambia in decision-making spaces at all levels.
Emmanuel Zulu
Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa
Emmanuel Zulu is an articulate and analytical individual; an economist by profession who studied at the University of Zambia and currently studying for a Master's in Project Management. He also holds Certificates in Competition Law and Policy, a Certificate in the Detection of Market Competition Law Violations, a Certificate in Statistical Analysis, and Monitoring and Evaluation. He is a dedicated and detail-oriented individual with over 10 years of work experience in fair trading law enforcement as well as business management.
David Diyame
Challenges of ICT at the primary and secondary level in the education sector of East and Southern Africa
David is an information technology specialist with more than five years of working with NGOs in the area of information systems, networks, databases, management, and maintenance of systems infrastructure security. He also develops and manages websites in WordPress, Joomla, and Google sites.
