Driving Change: Sara Mtagwa’s Journey with MC-Tanzania

Now in her ninth year with MC-Tanzania, Program Officer Sara Mtagwa remains motivated by the organization’s mission. She emphasizes that being part of MC-Tanzania provides her with opportunities for professional development, engagement with diverse communities, exposure to various challenges, and participation in innovative projects that foster continuous learning and growth.

“Being part of a team with shared goals and diverse perspectives is motivating with other affiliates. The collaboration at MCW Global encourages teamwork, creativity, innovation, and mutual support, making the work experience easy and inspiring.”

One of Sara’s most memorable experiences was the successful launch of a young leader conference in Tanzania in 2022 with the underlying message that for “fostering leadership in oral health care, communities are better when oral health care practitioners are equipped to lead, collectively identifying solutions to the challenges of the oral health care community and building cross-regional networks across East- and Southern African young dentists”.

“It was an opportunity for the dental therapist and other dental professionals to learn and networking channels also, participating in the Africa program seminar gave room for team members to grow and learn opportunities from different facilitators.”

A Mission That Resonates

MCW Global’s mission aligns closely with Sara’s values, particularly its commitment to empowering young leaders to create positive change.

“One example of how this resonated with me and was demonstrated in my engagement was through my involvement in implementing and organizing the program, as well as assisting the graduated dental therapist when they want to conduct the program of their own.”

Sara actively participated in sessions where she shared her expertise with emerging leaders, guiding them on career development, problem-solving, and leadership.

“Through these interactions, I witnessed firsthand the impact of empowering others with knowledge and support in pursuing their goals.”

Her work with MC-Tanzania has played a crucial role in her professional growth, particularly in leadership development.

“My work and engagement with the Dental Therapist Outreach program, World Oral Health Days, and Afya Check Campaign allowed me to develop my leadership skills, including communication, decision-making, and team management, in practical settings.”

Sara highlights the value of cross-cultural understanding and networking in her experience with MCW Global.

“MCW Global operates in diverse cultural contexts, providing me with exposure to different perspectives and ways of thinking. This experience enhanced my cultural competency and ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Also, it expanded my professional network, connecting me with like-minded individuals, mentors, and professionals across different industries.”

These connections have opened doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and partnerships, further enriching her journey.

Making a Meaningful Difference

Contributing to MCW Global’s mission has been deeply fulfilling for Sara, both professionally and personally.

“Knowing that my efforts are making a meaningful difference in the lives of others has been a source of motivation and satisfaction. In addition to leadership skills, my involvement with MCW Global provided opportunities for skill development in areas such as project management, strategic planning, and community engagement. These skills are invaluable assets in both personal and professional contexts.”

Her experience has shaped her into a more capable, adaptable, and socially conscious individual, equipping her with essential skills for success.

25 Years of Community Contribution: Looking Forward

As MCW Global marks its 25th anniversary, Sara envisions the organization expanding its reach and impact to empower even more communities and young leaders worldwide.

“Further, in a rapidly changing world, I hope MCW Global continues to innovate and adapt its programs and approaches to address emerging challenges and opportunities. This could involve leveraging new technologies, exploring novel methods of community engagement, or adapting programming to meet the evolving needs of young leaders.”

Sara is also eager to see MCW Global’s continued dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion within its programs and culture.

“This includes ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all young leaders, fostering an inclusive organizational culture, and actively addressing systemic barriers to participation. Also, I believe collaboration and partnerships are key to maximizing impact and leveraging resources effectively. I hope to see MCW Global strengthen existing partnerships and forge new collaborations with like-minded organizations, governments, and institutions to amplify its reach and influence.”

She concludes with an inspiring message about MCW Global’s long-term vision:

“MCW Global’s mission is not just about addressing current challenges but also investing in the future by cultivating a new generation of leaders who are equipped to tackle the complex issues facing our world with compassion, creativity, and determination.”
