In 1999, Eddie Bergman co‐founded MCW Global. In the years since, he was the non-profit’s Executive Director, a member of the Board of Directors, and, today, President of the Board.
During his 25-year journey with the organization, Eddie has worn many hats, but one thing has remained true: his commitment to working with vulnerable communities and young people around the world to create opportunities for better livelihoods.
Now, as MCW Global celebrates its 25th anniversary, Eddie is thinking about what the organization has achieved so far, and where it’s headed. Here are some edited excerpts from the conversation we had with him.
You’ve been President of the Board for 14 years. Why did you take on this position?
“I’m inspired to serve in this role as we continue to grow new and longtime connections around our vision of Local Change Through Global Exchange®. These relationships cut across generations and continents. Many of them are more than two decades old.”
“This inspiration stems from my surroundings and individuals who are committed to a common cause that has evolved and matured – and is dynamic enough to continue to ‘improve itself.’”
What do you think is one of MCW Global’s big accomplishments?
“I am proud to see the accomplishments of our alumni, partner organizations, board members, and volunteers. Over the years, MCW Global has provided technical experience, opened up new networks, and supported and encouraged many individuals to pursue meaningful work in their communities. An impressive number of our alumni have founded their own nonprofit organizations and social ventures, while others have pursued impactful careers.”
And, on a personal level?
“We always tell our volunteers, ‘You gain more from volunteering than you ever give.’ I think this is true for anyone who comes through MCW. There needs to be common respect and humility when helping people. And, I believe that each individual gains more by volunteering. On this incredible journey, I have built so many high-quality and long-lasting relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.”
Describe MCW Global’s growth as an organization.
“First I was a co-founder – a position I’ll always hold. Then, as our work grew, I became the organization’s first Executive Director. Inspired by the organization’s growth, I decided to step down as Executive Director in 2010 and joined the MCW Board of Directors. I think we successfully transitioned the organization to a new generation of leadership when Khalid Elachi became our Chief Operating Officer. Khalid first participated in an MCW program way back in 2003 and it was exciting for us to have one of our alumni step in to lead and grow the organization, Since then, Khalid has built a remarkable and passionate team of individuals all over the world, who are committed to MCW’s vision and mission.”
In the next few years, Eddie sees MCW Global focusing on continuing to diversify its donor base and increase its fundraising efforts.
“I also see MCW scaling up its programs to a level that is sustainable and where we can focus on our unique strengths.”
