Anne Lise: Proud of MC-Rwanda’s Impact, and Looking Forward to MCW Global’s Future as a Beacon of Positive Change

Anne Lise Uwingabiye, MC-Rwanda Program Manager, comes from Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, a country where the majority of the population are young people living in rural areas. Having worked in several rural districts, she has witnessed firsthand the basic needs of these communities- and the lack of opportunities to address them. This experience deepens her appreciation for the important work that MCW Global is doing in addressing these challenges.

“MCW Global’s mission to address pressing community needs by empowering current leaders and preparing the leaders of tomorrow resonates deeply with me,” she highlights at the beginning of the conversation.

“Coming from a place where these pressing needs are always visible- whether it’s a young person struggling with school access due to distance, someone missing a work opportunity because of language barriers, or a youth dropping out of school because of early pregnancy.”

It can be a young person with disability left out of education opportunities or an adolescent whose lack of confidence is rooted in lacking basic hygienic materials, she keeps counting.

“All these examples make me say that I have seen firsthand the importance of our work, and I understand how vital it is to keep working in furthering our common mission.”

Today, she feels motivated to work with MCW Global because of the supportive and collaborative environment it fosters- among other things.

A Worthwhile Mission- MC-Rwanda Supporting People in Need

Through its leadership, she adds, MCW Global not only takes action to improve communities but also fosters a culture of sharing and giving among the younger generation.

“Everyone is genuinely involved in the work that we do, I value how the organization holds us accountable while encouraging us to share our opinions freely. It is a place where it’s okay to make mistakes and have a space to learn and grow! The growth opportunities are abundant, and being part of a team that truly cares for each other is inspiring.”

Besides the organizational culture, Anne Lise appreciates the noble cause that drives her passion, too.

“By educating community members so that they reach economic security, we are committed to doing as much as possible with the resources we have, to support people in need. Knowing that our work makes a real difference in people’s lives makes every challenge worthwhile and every success meaningful.”

One of the most significant achievements that stands out to her is when the MC-Rwanda team co-designed a program aligning with their strategic plan which includes a comprehensive monitoring framework.

“This accomplishment has brought a profound sense of focus and direction to our work. It is fulfilling to see our team speaking the same language, tackling implementation challenges from multiple angles, and staying dynamic and self-motivated. This collaborative effort not only underscores our capability but also highlights the power of teamwork and shared vision.”

Having been with the organization for two years, she reflects on the mission and values.

Anne Lise highlights her favorite quote and how it connects to MCW Global’s mission.

“My favorite quote about leadership says, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” This perfectly aligns with MCW Global’s mission of addressing community’s pressing needs by empowering current leaders and readying leaders of tomorrow. It is a call for not just being proactive leaders but also nurturing future leaders.”

Accountability and respect are two of MCW Global’s core values that resonate deeply with her.

“At MC-Rwanda, I hold myself and my colleagues accountable, fostering a culture of growth and improvement. I believe that when we all hold each other accountable, that is how we grow as people, and as professionals. Respecting others, irrespective of their style, has laid the foundation for understanding and collaboration.”

Being involved with MCW Global has significantly contributed to her personal and professional growth.

“As a person who values systems for performance and consistency, and seeks meaning for impact, working here encourages me to be more organized, and pursue outcomes while staying adaptable and taking others along with me. The dynamic environment at MCW Global pushes me to consider all perspectives and make decisions outside my comfort zone. This constant push for excellence and collaboration is making me a more resilient and versatile professional.”

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary, Anne Lise hopes to see organizational growth, both in size and capacity.

“I aspire for us to attract the resources we need to thrive, and for everyone who joins us to learn something valuable. I hope we continue to love what we do and seek genuine impact in all our endeavors.”

“I want to see the MCW Global family remain a beacon of positive change, empowering both current and future leaders to make a significant difference.”

A moment in history: In partnership with MCW’s Jacqueline’s Human Rights Corner, MCW Global opened a community center in the village of Kayenzi, Bugesera in August 2011. Bugesera was chosen as the site for MC-Rwanda’s work in the country due to the high level of genocide survivors living in the region. Today, MCW Global works with the local MC-Rwanda Leadership Team (Board of Directors and Country Manager) to oversee the development and execution of the country plan for Rwanda. MC-Rwanda is registered with the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) as an international NGO.
