Elizabeth Moyo, a Board Member of MC-Zambia, shares the motivations behind her ongoing commitment to the organization and its mission.
“What motivated me to be part of the MC Zambia Board then and still motivates me now is the change we can bring to our communities and improve their lives. Changing lives no matter the numbers is a wonderful feeling. In addition, I have been motivated to use my experience and technical skills in my field of human resources to influence and advise, while also gaining exposure to a wide range of issues, building confidence, networks, and credibility.”
Reflecting on some of the most memorable moments of her engagement with MC-Zambia, Elizabeth recalls an impactful event:
“One particular moment that stands out is when MC-Zambia donated computers and textbooks to Chikupi Primary School in Chanyanya in 2023. Before the presentation started, the Programs Manager, Country Manager, and I waited in the parking lot. As l sat in the car, l could hear small girls and boys chirping away as they walked past our vehicle and perhaps wondered who we were. I could hear subtle conversations and laughter as they went on with their way. I engaged with some of the girls and talked about the importance of education and other small talk.”
What touched her the most was the children’s receptivity, their bright faces and smiles, and the beaming happiness they radiated.
“It was infectious, heartwarming, and truly memorable.”
Elizabeth also speaks to the deep connection between the mission of MCW Global and her values, sharing a powerful example from her own life:
“Being a mother of two sons at the university level of education, the mission of MCW Global which aims to ‘address communities pressing needs by empowering current leaders and readying leaders of tomorrow’ definitely resonates with me as a person and a mother as l visualize my sons to be great leaders of tomorrow.”
She acknowledges that this can be achieved only if the young leaders are supported, empowered, and mentored.
“The engagement at Chikupi Primary where computers and textbooks were donated is a testimony of our commitment to better the lives of our communities. Remembering here that some of our leaders in Zambia come from humble beginnings and it is inspirational to see where they are now. I am confident that some of the girls and boys we support in communities will live to tell the MC-Zambia story.”
Transforming Perspectives
Elizabeth’s perspective on society and the communities she engages with has evolved since joining MC-Zambia and becoming involved in its community work.
“At a personal level, the appreciation of the privileges we take for granted in life has increased. Interaction with communities has enhanced my social and dancing skills! At a professional level, it has been a moment of networking and connecting with different individuals, training, learning from various experiences, and enhancing skills. It has also been a moment of close interaction with staff at MC-Zambia, having open conversations with them and making them feel seen, heard, and supported.”
Through her work, she attended the Young Leaders Fellowship in New York and Vermont, and the Conference in Zambia, where she met and had meaningful conversations with young people.
“Together we shared experiences of life, appreciated their talents and creativity, and encouraged them to always remain focused and committed to whatever they embark on. In addition, having attended the Young Leaders Program events in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, New York, and Vermont in the United States of America gave me an inordinate appreciation of the young talent that we have globally and the amazing work that MCW Global is doing to tap into that talent and make a difference in the lives of young leaders by supporting their project initiatives.”
Celebrating 25th Anniversary of MCW-Global
In the next 5-10 years, Elizabeth visualizes MCW Global focusing on expanding its thematic areas and increasing its visibility and the numbers they have reached so far in Africa and other less explored areas.
“I wholeheartedly thank the founders of MCW Global and everyone connected to MCW Global for positively impacting different communities globally and contributing to the development of young people in an era where the pressures of society are challenging their mental health. Therefore, the support they need now is more critical than ever before.”
Elizabeth also encourages the MC-Zambia Board and management to rise above any challenges and to keep moving!
